How Smart Lubrication Helps Farmers Stretch Their Budgets

Farmers rely on a diverse fleet of machinery to keep their operations running smoothly—from bakkies and utility vehicles to tractors, harvesters, trailers, and equipment used for livestock maintenance and light earthworks. Keeping this equipment in good working order is essential, yet often a major challenge, especially as maintenance demands grow and budgets tighten.

Trevor Wentzel, sales representative for Lubrication Engineers (LE) South Africa in Rustenburg, believes that the right lubrication strategy can significantly reduce this burden. Drawing on both his technical expertise and personal experience managing game farms, Wentzel has seen first-hand how effective lubrication can transform maintenance planning.

“Something I’ve learned in farming is that once you fall behind on maintenance, you almost never catch up,” he says. “My goal is to help farmers not only catch up but put a sustainable long-term plan in place so they feel in control again.”

Right Lubricant, Right Machine

Farmers often operate with limited staff, meaning a single breakdown can halt several operations at once. “One person might be responsible for three different jobs,” Wentzel explains. “If a tractor breaks down, that one machine can stop three other tasks from happening. Improving reliability is one of the biggest services we can offer farmers.”

Choosing the correct lubricant for each machine—or selecting a high-quality multipurpose product—has a direct impact on performance, durability, and maintenance cycles. Fewer breakdowns mean fewer interruptions, and ultimately, reduced costs.

Fuel Savings and Reduced Downtime

Farm vehicles typically have high fuel consumption, and these costs quickly add up. Fuel additives, such as those supplied by LE, help improve efficiency in older engines and enhance performance in newer models. The result: lower fuel use and longer engine life.

Most farmers also rely on multiple tractors, winches, and trailers. Using a lubricant that lasts longer, combined with a reliable fuel additive, can deliver substantial savings across the entire fleet.

Wentzel notes that many farmers grease implements after every use, which often means the product isn’t staying in place long enough to provide meaningful protection. When grease flings off into fields or grazing land, it not only wastes product but also poses environmental risks.

“The ideal lubricant is one that stays where it’s needed,” he says. “It saves the farmer time, reduces environmental contamination, and improves the reliability of equipment.”

A Long-Term Investment in Reliability

For Wentzel, the most rewarding part of his work is seeing the difference the right lubrication solution makes. “I get genuinely excited when I help a client,” he says. “I know how overwhelming farm maintenance can be without the right products or guidance.”

While premium lubricants may cost more upfront, their long-term value far outweighs that initial investment. Cheaper products often deliver inferior protection, leading to more frequent repairs, higher downtime, and shorter equipment life.

“It’s an investment mentality,” Wentzel concludes. “Quality lubrication pays for itself through improved equipment performance, reduced maintenance, and a more efficient, more resilient farming operation.”
