Chinese machinery manufacturer Zoomlion is strengthening its presence in Africa by expanding into South Africa’s agricultural equipment market, introducing advanced mechanisation solutions designed to improve farm productivity while offering greater affordability for commercial and emerging farmers alike.
The company’s latest move reflects the growing demand for modern agricultural machinery across Africa, where producers are increasingly investing in technologies that improve operational efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and lower production costs. The expansion also supports the continent’s broader drive towards agricultural mechanisation as governments and agribusinesses seek to improve food security and increase farm productivity.
One of the highlights of Zoomlion’s showcase at NAMPO Harvest Day 2026 in Bothaville was the launch of the DV3504 hybrid tractor, which the company says is the first commercially available hybrid agricultural tractor introduced to the South African market.
According to Maartin Maritz, Product Specialist at Zoomlion, South Africa represents a strategic gateway for the company’s expansion into the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. While Zoomlion has operated successfully in South Africa’s construction equipment sector since 2007, the company is now leveraging that experience to establish a strong presence in agricultural machinery.
Maritz noted that rising input costs, labour shortages and the need for greater operational efficiency are encouraging farmers to seek cost-effective machinery capable of delivering the performance and technology expected from leading global manufacturers. Zoomlion already has an established agricultural machinery footprint in China, Türkiye, Russia, Australia, Kenya and Tanzania, providing valuable experience as it expands further across Africa.
To strengthen customer confidence, Zoomlion has transitioned from a reseller model to a dedicated dealership network in South Africa. The company operates a major distribution centre in Johannesburg alongside facilities in Cape Town, while authorised dealers are expected to stock spare parts and provide technical support closer to farming communities.
Dealer partnerships have already been established in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the Free State, with further expansion planned across the country. Recognising that after-sales support remains a key consideration for machinery buyers, Zoomlion offers a comprehensive two-year or 2,000-hour factory warranty on its equipment, while selected models equipped with lithium battery technology carry warranties of up to five years. The company also aims to minimise downtime through rapid spare parts supply and replacement machinery where repairs cannot be completed quickly.
Market response has been encouraging, with more than 40 Zoomlion tractors reportedly sold since the beginning of the year. According to the company, farmers have responded positively to the equipment’s combination of modern technology, robust build quality and competitive pricing, with some models available at significantly lower prices than comparable international brands.
Zoomlion’s agricultural portfolio includes tractors, combine harvesters, balers, planters, seeders, ploughs and grain dryers, with tractors currently available in South Africa ranging from 50hp to 350hp.
The centrepiece of the company’s latest offering is the DV3504 hybrid tractor, which combines a 350hp diesel engine with an electric drive system that provides additional torque during demanding field operations. According to Zoomlion, the hybrid technology can reduce fuel consumption by between 20% and 30%, particularly during variable-load applications where electric assistance improves efficiency and engine responsiveness.
Designed for heavy-duty agricultural operations, the DV3504 weighs approximately 13 tonnes and features an 8,800kg rear lifting capacity together with a hydraulic flow rate of up to 227 litres per minute, enabling it to operate efficiently with large and high-demand implements.
The tractor also incorporates advanced precision farming technologies, including the Zpilot Pro guidance system with high-precision satellite positioning that supports autonomous route planning, automated headland turning and centimetre-level steering accuracy. Operator comfort has also been prioritised through a fully insulated cab, 360-degree HD camera system, LED work lighting, ergonomic joystick controls, a rotatable air-suspension seat and integrated heated and cooled storage compartments.
Looking ahead, Zoomlion plans to introduce the larger DX7004 hybrid tractor, delivering approximately 700hp, to the South African market next year. Before launching the higher-powered model, however, the company intends to familiarise local farmers with hybrid tractor technology and demonstrate the operational and economic benefits it can deliver under African farming conditions.
As agriculture across Africa continues its transition towards smarter and more sustainable production systems, innovations such as hybrid tractors, precision agriculture and intelligent machinery are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving efficiency, reducing operating costs and enhancing the competitiveness of the continent’s farming sector.
