Yobe govt distribute livestock disease containment equipment

In an effort to prevent the outbreak of livestock disease, Yobe state government has distributed containment equipment and medicament its zonal offices across the state.

While flagging off the distribution of the disease containment equipments and medicament at the premises of Yobe state ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the commissioner Dr Mairo Ahmed Amshi said the measure was part of the post insurgency plan by Governor Mai Mala Buni to revive the livestock sector in the state.

According to official documents like the RIM Report of 1991, Yobe state is one of the major livestock producers in Nigeria.

Last year, Yobe state government organized its maiden Agricultural summit with a view to revive the agricultural sector to create chain of income generating activities to help communities ravaged by insurgency to be on their feet again.

The Yobe state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Dr Mairo Ahmed Amshi said though there was no outbreak of any livestock disease in the state, the distribution of the containment equipment and medicament was a preventive measure against resurgence of diseases like Avian Influenza, African Swine Fever and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus happening in some part of the country in addition to intensify disease surveillance and Biosecurity measures to safeguard the state owned livestock resources.

Dr Mairo Amshi, however, commended the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development for the construction of standard live Bird market with equipment in Potiskum and regional disease surveillance and systems project as well as international committee of the Red Cross for supporting the ministry with some items.

Similarly, the Director Veterinary services in Yobe state ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dr Garba Ibrahim urged people to support government effort towards reviving the agric sector specially livestock production because of its economic benefits and for the overall development of the state.

Also, the chairman Yobe state chapter of the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association Dr Bulama Maina Yaro assured their readiness to render quality services in order have healthy livestock for healthy communities and improved revenue to the state.

He appealed to the livestock farmers to always consult veterinarians whenever they observed any sign of health challenge with their livestock.

The five zonal offices are located at Damaturu, Gashua,Geidam, Nangere and Potiskum.
