Tru-Cape Turns Up the Heat at Nyama Battle: Apples & Pears Take the Spotlight in South African Flavours

The flames are roaring at Nyama Battle, South Africa’s top live-fire cooking competition — and this year, Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing is spicing things up with apples and pears taking center stage.

As proud sponsors, Tru-Cape is challenging chefs and home cooks to go beyond dessert, showcasing how these versatile fruits can elevate bold, smoky dishes inspired by local shisanyama culture. From tangy chutneys to grilled skewers and even a twist on tzatziki (dubbed “tzanini”), apples and pears are proving they’re more than just a snack.

“We’re thrilled to see our fruit reimagined in ways that celebrate South African creativity and heritage,” says Roelf Pienaar, Tru-Cape’s Managing Director. “Our apples and pears, grown with care by local farmers, are bringing balance, sweetness, and freshness to the fire.”

Contestants like Gershwin Gordon and Nombini Dingela wowed judges with their takes on Tru-Cape apple chutneys—pairing natural sweetness with bold spices like smoked paprika and cinnamon to complement meats and salads alike.

Marketing Director Conrad Fick adds, “South African cuisine is as diverse as its people, and our produce brings a local, dynamic edge to the plate—whether roasted, grilled, or fresh.”

As Nyama Battle heads into its final episodes, Tru-Cape salutes the chefs pushing boundaries and bringing the heat. When the coals die down, one thing’s clear: apples and pears have earned their place at the grill — fresh, homegrown, and proudly South African.
