Nominations Now Open for the 2025 Africa Food Prize

The Africa Food Prize (AFP) has officially opened nominations for its 2025 award, inviting submissions for individuals and institutions that are making groundbreaking contributions to food security, sustainability, and agricultural transformation across Africa.

This prestigious US$100,000 award recognizes those who are driving innovation, advancing climate-smart agriculture, enhancing market access, and improving livelihoods through sustainable and inclusive food systems.

Honoring Africa’s Food Heroes

H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, Chair of the Africa Food Prize Committee, emphasized the significance of recognizing changemakers shaping Africa’s agricultural future:

“Each year, the Africa Food Prize shines a spotlight on remarkable individuals and organizations who dedicate their lives to building a more food-secure and prosperous Africa. As we open nominations for 2025, we look forward to discovering the next generation of African food heroes whose resilience and ingenuity are transforming our continent.”

Similarly, AFP Committee Member Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli underscored the urgency of finding solutions to food system challenges:

“The obstacles facing African agriculture are complex, but the solutions are within reach. The Africa Food Prize celebrates those daring to innovate, challenge the status quo, and build a sustainable and equitable food future. We encourage everyone to nominate inspiring leaders whose work deserves recognition and amplification.”

Key Focus Areas for the 2025 Award

This year, the Africa Food Prize is particularly interested in nominations that demonstrate impact in the following areas:

Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems – Promoting environmentally responsible practices and climate adaptation strategies.
Inclusive Agricultural Growth – Empowering smallholder farmers, women, and youth in the agricultural value chain.
Technological Innovation – Leveraging science and technology to enhance productivity, nutrition, and food security.
Market Access & Agribusiness Development – Strengthening linkages between farmers and markets while promoting value addition.

Selection Process and Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be evaluated based on their:

🔹 Contribution to employment and job creation
🔹 Sustainability and scalability of their initiatives
🔹 Potential to inspire positive change across Africa

Past Winners Leading Agricultural Innovation

  • 2024 Winner: Tinotenda Mhiko, CEO of Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA), Zimbabwe, was recognized for his leadership in strategic irrigation initiatives revolutionizing Zimbabwe’s food systems.
  • 2023 Winner: The Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) was honored for developing high-yielding, nutritious bean varieties that boost farmer productivity and profitability.
