Two Winners, One Epic Finale: Nyama Battle Proves Dreams Really Do Come True

After weeks of smoke, spice, and sizzling shishanyama showdowns, Nyama Battle on eTV has come to a spectacular close — and what a finale it was. Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, a proud sponsor of the show, celebrates this unforgettable moment alongside the nation.

Crowned Champion: Congratulations to Gershwin Gordon, a private chef and caterer from Johannesburg, who walked away as the Nyama Battle winner. With his bold creativity, culinary finesse, and heartfelt passion, Gershwin wowed both the judges and viewers to clinch the top spot — earning a fully equipped food truck and a rugged Nissan Navara bakkie.

A Surprise Twist: In a heartwarming turn of events, runner-up Wayne Riley, owner of The Green Room in Kommetjie, also received a major reward — a custom food trailer to fuel his growing food business. Wayne’s unwavering talent and grit throughout the competition made him a fan favourite and a deserving co-star of the finale.

The Final Showdown: The last challenge saw both finalists incorporating Tru-Cape apples into a showstopping dessert. Gershwin pulled out all the stops with a drunken apple crumble mille-feuillefeaturing crisp layers of pastry, warmly spiced apple crumble, rich custard, crème fraîche, and a decadent toffee drizzle. It was a dessert that perfectly captured the versatility of South Africa’s favourite fruit.

Wayne, meanwhile, delivered his own standout dish: an apple fritter with rum syrup and apple purée — proving once again his refined touch and culinary flair.

Celebrating SA’s Food Culture:
From the very beginning, the contestants reminded us why South African cuisine is so vibrant and worth celebrating,” said Roelf Pienaar, managing director of Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing. “Seeing our apples used in such innovative ways was a proud moment — and we’re grateful to every contestant for showcasing just how exciting local produce can be.”

From a nationwide talent search to the final cook-off, Nyama Battle brought together 12 exceptional chefs and food lovers — all united by their love of food and fire.

Tru-Cape’s Proud Partnership:
We were thrilled to be part of a show that uplifts talent and celebrates quality,” said Conrad Fick, marketing director at Tru-Cape. “Watching future culinary stars emerge, knowing we supported that journey — it’s truly inspiring. The passion, resilience, and raw skill displayed throughout the series are exactly what Tru-Cape stands for.”

Though Nyama Battle has wrapped, Tru-Cape’s commitment to elevating local talent and food culture is far from over.

Looking Ahead:
As always, we remain dedicated to supporting projects and people that make South African apples and pears shine,” Roelf added.

Here’s to bold flavours, rising stars, and the power of good food to bring people together.
