ZEISS has introduced the AURA analyzer, a portable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy system designed to bring rapid feed and forage analysis directly to farms, barns, silos and fields.
The device aims to help dairy producers, livestock operators and feed consultants make more informed nutritional decisions by providing on-site insights into feed composition without relying solely on laboratory testing.
Feed materials such as grass silage, hay and mixed rations naturally vary in moisture and nutritional composition. These variations can affect ration formulation, feed efficiency and livestock performance. Traditional laboratory analysis often involves collecting samples and sending them to external facilities, with results potentially taking several days or longer to become available.
The ZEISS AURA analyzer is designed to shorten this process by delivering feed composition measurements at the point of sampling, allowing operators to assess raw materials and make timely adjustments to feeding strategies.
Designed for representative feed analysis
One of the challenges associated with portable NIR spectroscopy is obtaining reliable measurements from heterogeneous agricultural materials. Forages and silages often contain unevenly distributed plant particles, moisture levels and nutrient concentrations, making representative sampling particularly important.
To address this challenge, the AURA analyzer features an enlarged optical measurement window and a generously sized sample dish. This arrangement accommodates a larger sample volume, helping improve the representativeness of measurements.
An integrated mechanical pressure plate applies consistent pressure to the sample, helping standardise presentation and reduce variations caused by uneven packing or air gaps.
The analyzer is operated through a guided mobile application that assists users with sample preparation and displays measurement results shortly after analysis.
Cloud connectivity supports smarter ration management
Beyond on-site measurement, the AURA analyzer connects with the ZEISS Cloud Platform, enabling analytical data to be synchronised and accessed digitally.
This connectivity is intended to support collaboration between livestock producers, feed consultants and nutrition specialists. By making feed composition data available more quickly, users can better assess raw materials and make adjustments to Total Mixed Ration (TMR) formulations as conditions change.
According to Christian Schultheiss, Head of Digital Innovation at ZEISS Spectroscopy, the system helps shorten the path between raw-material sampling and actionable information for feed management.
Dr Jochen Hallmann, Head of the Agri/Food Business Field at ZEISS Spectroscopy, also highlighted the growing importance of precision optical measurement in agricultural decision-making, particularly in improving transparency and data availability throughout livestock production chains.
Supporting precision in livestock nutrition
The introduction of AURA reflects the increasing role of portable analytical technologies in modern agriculture. By combining NIR spectroscopy, standardised sample presentation and cloud connectivity, ZEISS aims to make feed analysis more accessible at the point where nutritional decisions are made.
For dairy and livestock operations, more timely information about moisture, protein and fibre composition can support better-informed ration management, potentially helping to reduce feed variability and improve resource efficiency.
As precision livestock farming continues to develop, portable feed analysis systems such as AURA could become valuable tools for producers seeking greater control over feed quality, nutritional consistency and day-to-day farm management.
