NAMPO 2026 Focuses on Turning Innovation Into Sustainable Farming

South Africa’s agricultural sector is undergoing a clear shift in focus—moving beyond short-term survival toward long-term profitability driven by practical innovation, smarter decision-making, and operational efficiency. Today, resilience is no longer defined only by the ability to withstand challenges, but by how effectively farmers adapt, improve productivity, and remain sustainably profitable over time.

This evolution will take centre stage at the 2026 NAMPO Harvest Day in Bothaville, which will focus on the theme “Resilience Through Innovation.”

While rising input and logistics costs continue to place pressure on the agricultural value chain, the sector’s response is increasingly strategic. Rather than relying on short-term defensive measures, farmers and agribusinesses are prioritising planning, financial discipline, and innovation-led growth.

“Resilience in agriculture has evolved,” says Brendan Jacobs, Head of Agribusiness at Standard Bank South Africa. “It is no longer just about surviving a difficult season. It is about using innovation and better information to make smarter decisions, manage risk, and build farming businesses that remain profitable.”

Across the sector, innovation is being applied more selectively and with clear purpose. Farmers are focusing on solutions that deliver measurable value—whether through improved operational efficiency, stronger financial management, or better access to markets. The emphasis is no longer on innovation for its own sake, but on tools and systems that can be implemented practically in the short to medium term.

“Profitability has become the clearest indicator of resilience,” Jacobs adds. “When innovation is applied with intent and supported by sound financial planning, it helps farmers manage volatility while positioning their businesses for sustainable growth.”

Discussions expected at NAMPO Harvest Day 2026 reflect a sector actively reshaping itself—transforming resilience from a defensive mindset into a strategy for long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

Standard Bank South Africa will engage with clients and industry stakeholders at the event, taking place from 12 to 15 May 2026 in Bothaville, Free State. The focus will be on how innovation can be effectively translated into commercially resilient and future-ready agricultural businesses.
