The Importance of Pivot Sprinkler Systems for Irrigation Efficiency

When it comes to centre pivot irrigation, few factors are as critical as the sprinkler package. While the pivot’s structure provides the backbone, it’s the sprinklers that directly determine irrigation efficiency, uniformity, and ultimately, crop performance.

Why Sprinkler Choice Matters

The type of sprinkler and its spacing control how evenly and efficiently water is distributed.

  • Uniformity means every part of the field receives the same amount of water. Each sprinkler’s wetted area should overlap by at least 150% to avoid dry or overwatered patches.

  • Droplet size: Larger droplets resist drift and evaporation, but smaller droplets reduce soil compaction.
  • Trajectory: High spray angles can increase drift, while low-energy precision application (LEPA) reduces losses and applies water in narrow paths.

Reducing Soil Compaction

When droplets strike the ground, they exert force that can compact the soil, especially in clay-rich fields. Compaction reduces root growth and water infiltration.

A well-designed sprinkler throws small droplets as far as possible, distributing water gently and evenly to protect soil structure.
