At its 14th Governing Council meeting in Nairobi, the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) was praised for unlocking $10.3 million in credit guarantees that helped over 115,000 smallholder farmers across Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe access 18,448 tons of fertilizer in 2024.
Backed by the African Development Bank, AFFM supports both organic and inorganic fertilizer distribution and soil health programs, helping close Africa’s productivity gap.
“This progress brings us closer to making Africa a food basket,” said Ambassador Moses Vilakati, the new Council Chair and AU Commissioner.
With 64% of African countries heavily reliant on food imports, AFFM’s work is critical to reversing that trend. The Council also reviewed plans for “AFFM 2.0,” a roadmap to align with the Nairobi Declaration on Fertilizer and Soil Health, aiming for a greener, more food-secure continent.
