Agrico Scales Up PVC Pipe Production to Meet Southern Africa’s Water Infrastructure Demands

South African irrigation leader Agrico is set to revolutionize the region’s water delivery systems with a new production line capable of manufacturing rigid mPVC and uPVC pipes up to 800mm in diameter—the largest of its kind in Southern Africa.

Slated to begin operations in early 2026, the upgraded extrusion line marks a significant leap for the agricultural and municipal sectors, where large-diameter, high-capacity piping is critical for efficient water transport across vast and increasingly commercialized farms.

“Our investments in quality control have translated into strong market demand,” said Roland Andrag, Agrico’s Technical Director. “After launching a 630mm pipe in 2025 and receiving an overwhelmingly positive response, we’re confident there’s room in the Southern African market for 710mm and 800mm mPVC and uPVC pipe solutions.”

The new production line will manufacture pipes ranging from 400mm to 800mm in diameter, easing the load on smaller lines and increasing overall manufacturing efficiency. The pipes will be available in both Agrico’s IsoFlo (uPVC) and IsoTuff (mPVC) pressure-rated product lines, all certified to SANS standards.

According to Rynhardt Nelson, Agrico’s Factory Manager, large-diameter PVC pipes are increasingly vital in modern irrigation systems. Speaking to Farmer’s Weekly, he explained that the 710mm size is widely used in large-scale schemes as transmission mains—moving water from dams to field networks.

“With farms scaling up, higher pumping capacity is essential,” Nelson said. “Larger pipes let farmers move more water during daylight hours, especially when using solar power, rather than running pumps around the clock.”

Nelson emphasized that PVC offers exceptional value, balancing affordability with strength and durability. Its lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and chemically inert properties make it ideal not only for irrigation but also for municipal and industrial water systems.

“800mm pipes are critical for bulk water supply, stormwater management, and rural irrigation infrastructure,” he added. “They ensure efficient distribution across rural and peri-urban regions where water conservation and delivery reliability are top priorities.”

Agrico’s expanded production will also help unlock new opportunities. The company plans to enter the sewer and drainage pipe market once capacity permits, further broadening its product range.

“This investment solidifies Agrico’s role as the go-to provider of large-diameter pressure piping for agriculture, construction, and municipal infrastructure,” Andrag said. “Our upgraded capacity and reliable stock availability mean farmers and planners can count on fast access to durable, high-performance pipes—supporting sustainable water delivery systems and the future of agriculture in the region.”
