New Malawi App Supports Farmers in Tackling Crop Diseases

The Mnzeru Mkupangwa mobile app, powered by AI, was launched to support Malawian farmers facing crop diseases and limited agricultural knowledge.

With just a smartphone camera, the app allows farmers to quickly identify plant diseases, providing instant access to expert agricultural insights that were previously hard to come by. According to a World Bank report, many Malawian farmers lack access to modern farming techniques, contributing to low adoption rates of efficient practices.

The app addresses this gap in a sector where only 7% of Malawians are commercial farmers, and 24% of them still live in poverty. Crop diseases account for significant economic losses, sometimes reaching 40%. By offering real-time disease detection, Mnzeru Mkupangwa aims to help farmers improve yields, boost income, and enhance overall economic stability.
