Protecting crop yields requires decisions from planting through harvest

Corn and soybean yields can be reduced by a series of smaller management setbacks rather than a single major event. Planting conditions, crop establishment, weed control, nutrition, disease management, scouting and harvest timing can all influence the final result.

For U.S. growers moving from the 2026 harvest into planning for the next crop, protecting yield potential begins well before the planter enters the field.

Agronomists and farmers say losses can accumulate through poor planting conditions, uneven emergence, weed competition, nutrient limitations, disease, weather stress and harvest inefficiencies. A crop may tolerate one stress without a major yield reduction, but several smaller stresses can compound throughout the growing season.

For growers facing tighter margins, commodity-price uncertainty and high input costs, identifying potential yield losses early can be as important as pursuing maximum yield potential.
Yield protection starts before planting

The offseason provides an opportunity to identify field conditions and management practices that could restrict the next crop.

Dan Quinn, Purdue Extension corn specialist, describes corn yield as the result of decisions and environmental conditions extending from the moment seed enters the soil until grain leaves the field.

Farmer and XtremeAg partner Clint Frese recommends looking beyond routine soil testing and fertility programmes by examining elevation, drainage and field variability. On irrigated farms, evaluating water mineral content can also help identify potential interactions with plant nutrients.

Poor drainage and nutrient limitations can create yield constraints before planting. Combining soil information with field maps and other precision-agriculture data can help growers identify areas requiring different management strategies.
Planter performance and soil conditions

Planter wear, damaged components and incorrect settings can affect seed depth, placement, spacing and seed-to-soil contact across large areas.

The objective is uniform emergence. Plants emerging at significantly different times can compete differently for sunlight, water and nutrients, creating variability that may persist through the season.

Soil conditions at planting are equally important. Jared Roskamp, a BASF technical service representative, pointed to the 2026 season as an example of growers sometimes working under less-than-ideal conditions.

Planting into soils that are too wet can damage soil structure, restrict seed-to-soil contact and contribute to uneven emergence. However, delaying planting also carries potential yield risks.

The challenge is therefore not simply planting as early as possible, but identifying when soil conditions are suitable for consistent establishment.
Managing the crop through harvest

Once the crop has emerged, weed control, nutrition and plant health become critical. Weeds compete with crops for water, nutrients and sunlight, while nutrient availability can be affected by soil moisture, root development, pH and other environmental conditions.

Regular scouting can help identify weed pressure, nutrient deficiencies and disease symptoms before problems become widespread.

Yield protection also continues through harvest. Delays, lodging, weather damage and poorly adjusted harvesting equipment can result in field and grain losses.

Ultimately, protecting yield requires managing the entire production system. Soil preparation influences planting, planting affects emergence, and crop establishment influences how effectively plants compete for resources.

The goal is not to eliminate every source of crop stress, but to prevent manageable problems from accumulating into significant yield losses. From field preparation and planter calibration to scouting, crop nutrition and harvest management, each decision contributes to the final crop outcome.
