AGCO has introduced a hydraulic bale singulation chute for the Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB small square baler, designed to streamline bale collection and reduce unnecessary field passes.
Commercial hay and forage producers operate within narrow weather windows, making efficient baling and field clearance essential for maintaining crop quality and controlling labor and fuel costs. Although dual-chamber balers increase productivity by producing two small square bales simultaneously, their side-by-side discharge patterns can complicate downstream collection.
The new hydraulic singulation chute addresses this challenge by arranging discharged bales into a single row, enabling compatible retrieval equipment to collect them in one continuous pass.
Hydraulic Singulation System and Operating Principle
The Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB produces two 14-by-18-inch bales simultaneously using its dual-chamber configuration. The singulation chute coordinates their discharge, releasing the bales sequentially rather than dropping them side by side.
An integrated hydraulic mechanism indexes the bales into a single line along the direction of travel. Adjustable mechanical paddles help regulate the release sequence to accommodate different bale lengths and operating conditions.
The system uses an onboard hydraulic pump, with a single auxiliary hydraulic connection to the tractor providing the functions required to raise and lower the chute.
Ground Following, Transport and Maintenance
Operating behind a high-capacity baler across uneven terrain requires reliable ground clearance and controlled movement. The chute features a patent-pending chassis design with caster wheels and a dedicated suspension assembly, allowing it to follow ground contours independently of the baler’s tongue angle.
This configuration helps maintain clearance over wheel ruts, irrigation ditches and uneven headlands while reducing the risk of ground contact.
For road transport and headland manoeuvres, the operator can hydraulically raise the chute and secure it in an upright position. The raised configuration also provides access to the lower assembly for routine inspection.
Maintenance is further simplified through spliced conveyor belts, allowing technicians to replace belt sections without removing the main roller shafts.
Benefits for Commercial Hay and Forage Operations
Dual-chamber balers can increase baling output and improve tractor utilisation, but efficient downstream collection remains essential to achieving overall productivity gains.
By placing bales in a single row, the singulation chute is designed to improve compatibility with suitable bale retrieval wagons and pull-type stackers. Operators can collect both bales during a continuous forward pass, reducing the need for repeated collection runs or complex equipment manoeuvres.
Fewer field passes can help lower diesel consumption, reduce soil compaction and improve labour efficiency, particularly across large commercial hay and forage operations.
The system therefore addresses an important part of the harvesting workflow: coordinating high-capacity baling with efficient bale retrieval.
Supporting More Efficient Forage Harvesting
AGCO showcased the hydraulic singulation chute on the Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB at the 2026 Farm Progress Show. The attachment targets commercial hay producers looking to improve field logistics and make better use of existing collection equipment.
As forage operations continue to prioritise productivity, equipment integration and lower operating costs, bale discharge management offers another opportunity to improve harvesting efficiency. By converting a dual-bale discharge pattern into a single collection row, the singulation chute aims to help producers move from baling to retrieval with fewer interruptions and more efficient field operations.
